How To Care For Cut Roses


I often get asked by friends and clients how do you maximise the vase life of your roses? And what I tell them is that it’s quite simple. Follow these steps and your roses will look great and last as long as possible.



1. When you get roses from the florist or grocers, it usually comes wrapped up in clear plastic and with a couple of sachets of flower food. You will need a clean vase with clean water, a good pair of garden secateurs and a long stick to mix in your flower food.



2. Use room temperature water. Fill your vase ½ to ¾ full with room temperature (not cold) water. Room temperature water can be absorbed by roses better than cold.



3. Flower food. Add flower food to water according to package directions and mix in with stick until powder is dissolved. Flower food contains ingredients that work together to prolong the life of your roses by providing food source, moderating the pH level of water and killing harmful bacteria.



4. Remove leaves below the water line. Leaves in the water causes bacteria to grow, which will shorten the vase life of roses. Removing the thorns is optional.



5. Cut the stems. Cut the stems about an inch from the bottom. Stems need to be cut at an angle as this allows water to be absorbed better.


06_CUT-ROSES6. Put immediately into water. Once stems are cut, place roses immediately in vase.


7. Repeat. For optimum vase life (over 7 days), repeat these steps every three days or when water becomes cloudy – take the roses out of vase and clean your vase with hot soapy water. Refill vase with clean water and flower food. Cut your stems an inch and place back in vase.


Showcasing your flowers

1. Display your roses in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and drafts.

2. Give roses a “face-lift” by gently removing discoloured or drooping petals from roses to give them a fresh, just-received appearance even after several days.

3. Keep your roses away from ripening fruit. Ripe fruits give off ethylene gas, which shorten the life of cut roses.
